I was sending my son off to school and I saw this man standing in the middle of the road, racing up and down. He was doing the Balancing Act -- laptop wide open on his left hand and his mobile on the other, frantically dialling someone's number. He walked straight up to the junction where three roads meet, and one could tell he was waiting for someone. And mind you, he still had the laptop open, though he was doing nothing. Was this a Showoff Act? Well, perhaps yes. And who's the mega star? The gadget, of course!
I stood there, clinging to the window, waiting for the outcome. A taxi arrived. He rushed towards it, gave the driver instructions, and the laptop was still wide open! He struggled to get in, but he was still holding someone on line, on his iPhone! Though this bewildered me, it is the sad state of affairs today. Gadgets, today's mega stars, have come to stay in most of our lives. And these mega stars have brought with them the mega villain, Laziness. Our life is not a movie, and the mega star cannot win over the mega villain here.
With so many gadgets out there, everyone has become so dependent on them that they set reminders and alarms for even mundane, everyday activities. Today's youngsters and teens are hardcore addicts, and changing or upgrading to the next version has become a hobby. Some of them buy new gadgets just for fun, or opt for a "better" gadget to keep up with mere peer pressure.
Mention any new word, and today's generation immediately relates to the only word, "Search". Gadgets and the Internet are bringing about a sea change in our lives, but is the time spent really worth it? Have we forgotten to look past the window (Windows) and admire the Nature in all its beauty? I'm sure most of us admire scenic landscapes on the gadget window today rather than the real window!
If this is to continue, there will come a time when the human brain will have an information overload. Related health problems will follow, and no medicine can cure a gadget-ridden, information-flooded brain.
Stressful lives have come to stay. At least we can reduce the stress that we tend to create on our own, by minimising the use of gadgets. Or should I say, at least using them one at a time?

Indeed this is a sorry state of affairs today. We need to make people and life our priority again rather than let inanimate objects rule us.
ReplyDeleteI would rather say, these gadgets can be best utilized for finding time for family, health and refreshments, if we handle them appropriately. I had once read Robin Sharma, who asks to turn off all gadgets (the interfering/distracting ones) during the first two hours of work. This can improve our efficiency. However, life has become impossible without them, and struggles have moreover multiplied, because we do not know the efficient way of utilizing them for the purpose we brought them into our life.
ReplyDeleteIncase we do not attend to something instantaneously, these gadgets help us best by showing us the unattended in the logs, so here we must understand that gadgets are only for making life easy, and not be their slaves.
