Mega star vs. Mega villain

I was sending my son off to school and I saw this man standing in the middle of the road, racing up and down. He was doing the Balancing Act -- laptop wide open on his left hand and his mobile on the other, frantically dialling someone's number. He walked straight up to the junction where three roads meet, and one could tell he was waiting for someone. And mind you, he still had the laptop open, though he was doing nothing. Was this a Showoff Act? Well, perhaps yes. And who's the mega star? The gadget, of course!

I stood there, clinging to the window, waiting for the outcome. A taxi arrived. He rushed towards it, gave the driver instructions, and the laptop was still wide open! He struggled to get in, but he was still holding someone on line, on his iPhone! Though this bewildered me, it is the sad state of affairs today. Gadgets, today's mega stars, have come to stay in most of our lives. And these mega stars have brought with them the mega villain, Laziness. Our life is not a movie, and the mega star cannot win over the mega villain here.

With so many gadgets out there, everyone has become so dependent on them that they set reminders and alarms for even mundane, everyday activities. Today's youngsters and teens are hardcore addicts, and changing or upgrading to the next version has become a hobby. Some of them buy new gadgets just for fun, or opt for a "better" gadget to keep up with mere peer pressure.

Mention any new word, and today's generation immediately relates to the only word, "Search". Gadgets and the Internet are bringing about a sea change in our lives, but is the time spent really worth it? Have we forgotten to look past the window (Windows) and admire the Nature in all its beauty? I'm sure most of us admire scenic landscapes on the gadget window today rather than the real window!

If this is to continue, there will come a time when the human brain will have an information overload. Related health problems will follow, and no medicine can cure a gadget-ridden, information-flooded brain.

Stressful lives have come to stay. At least we can reduce the stress that we tend to create on our own, by minimising the use of gadgets. Or should I say, at least using them one at a time?

Queen of Questions

Comments

  1. Indeed this is a sorry state of affairs today. We need to make people and life our priority again rather than let inanimate objects rule us.

  2. I would rather say, these gadgets can be best utilized for finding time for family, health and refreshments, if we handle them appropriately. I had once read Robin Sharma, who asks to turn off all gadgets (the interfering/distracting ones) during the first two hours of work. This can improve our efficiency. However, life has become impossible without them, and struggles have moreover multiplied, because we do not know the efficient way of utilizing them for the purpose we brought them into our life.

Incase we do not attend to something instantaneously, these gadgets help us best by showing us the unattended in the logs, so here we must understand that gadgets are only for making life easy, and not be their slaves.

To be or not to be

Elders always say, "Be like him or be like her" and what not. But sometimes, they also do say the exact opposite. When asked to elaborate on this, they say "just trying to help you" and walk away. Now my question is: Do you follow the advice? Do you take the plunge? What they say is about their own experiences. They lived in a world free of competition, and studied in libraries and with enormous dictionaries.  Now-a-days, there is a lot of competition in the form of exams, quizzes, and other milestones. It is like a staircase, which seems never-ending. The steps to even reach the landing or get a glimpse of the summit is far-fetched, especially when it comes to studies. Those who make these statements are blissfully unaware of today's problems. So, do we listen to them? Or do we walk away? To be? Or not to be??? Czar of Confusion

Gifts: Pricey vs. priceless

Why do we hesitate to say 'no' to a gift? Our face lights up and we are overjoyed when someone actually hands over a gift, especially when it is least expected. Gifts have become a fashion icon these days. Not only the gift that is given, but the one that's taken back. Even children, when they are the invitees of a birthday party, are eager to get something in "return" and that's how the modern concept of return gift was born. Children seem to be enchanted by return gifts even when they get a simple pencil box or a party cap. But how far this culture is taking us and the next generation, is a pertinent question. Today being Teachers' Day, my thoughts roll back to this insignificant but impacting gesture of children in a school I worked. The day started with hoots and cheerful din which I thought were rather unnecessary, at least not from school children who are barely 15. I can understand if those in the late teens had behaved so. The children who

Master your mind to become a mastermind

How is my friend so tension free? How is my next door neighbour with three young children able to manage everything with grace and poise day after day? Why doesn't my spouse react when there is an argument? Why do I get so stressed at the end of the day? Why do I feel fatigued often? If some of these questions have been flooding your mind of late, you simply have one common answer. Accept the bitter fact: Your mind is not in your control. Irksome behaviour, frowning eyebrows, splitting headache, and some other common problems arise when you are NOT the master of your mind. So, what should I do if I have to stay cool, be organised, self-disciplined and develop good personality traits? Become the master of your mind. Keeping the mind under control makes you self-disciplined. That will automatically teach you the limits. You have the leash in your hand; your mind is in total control and you will soon realise that you can overcome temptations. Once your mind is in control
