'Colon' madness


Once again, the week ended with too much stress. And the weekend also was hectic. It was Sandy-Mandy time, I thought. Even as I was reading the newspaper, I could hear a faint conversation that became louder and clearer as the clock ticked away...

 Sandy: Arre yaar...museebat yaar...

 Mandy: What happened? You seem so stressed out...

 Sandy: This 'colon' is making my head reel. I don't understand anything. My son was preparing for his exam and asked me what a colon was. I escaped from the study room for a few minutes so that I can search for the answer on my phone and let him know.

 Mandy (equally stressed and concerned): So, did you find the answer?

 Sandy: That is the problem yaar...one website has some big and colourful pictures, says structure of colon and human anatomy. Another website says it is a punctuation mark used to explain something, start enumeration or list. I forgot to ask my son which colon he wanted to know...

 Mandy: Big mistake, Beedu! You should confirm spelling before searching. Sometimes same word has different spelling and different meaning...The other day my friend said he sent me a surprise through male. I was thinking why he choose only male to send. Probably it was too heavy...I waited for two days and called him when no one came home to give the surprise...Only then he said he was sending through internet!! Why can't he tell properly?

 Sandy: Hey...it must be letter that comes in internet connection. But how he sent the 'surprise' without anyone carrying it? Real surprise yaar!!!

 Mandy: I know!! Coming back to your colon, see all websites and make summary so that you can give proper explanation to your son. He should not think Papa doesn't know anything. Also include some details about the cancer that occurs in the colon stomach, if you want extra marks.

 Sandy: Good idea! I will take the pictures from the human anatomy website...pictures are really good. And write the explanation from the punctuation usage, which was very long and detailed. I don't know how children study these days, with so much information available...difficult to choose. Hope he gets good marks at least in this test.

 Mandy: I also wish him all the best. Hope he gets full marks. By the way, my wife wanted me to buy some colon (cologne) from the shop. She wants to be fresh and fragrant for the party tonight. I will pick a pink one. She will like that flavour...Hey Sandy! Don't forget to mention this colon also to your son...he might get extra marks.

 Sandy: Great! He will learn something new! But...I didn't find any information about this colon when I searched the internet. What if he asks me to explain?

 Mandy: Are Budhdhu...This will be in the advertisement section. Search well, and inform me after you have found it.

 Sandy: Sure, you can also save the information for future use.


 Having found a solution to this 'colon' problem, Sandy and Mandy faded into the oblivion. They were definitely relieved of stress.

Gifts: Pricey vs. priceless

Why do we hesitate to say 'no' to a gift? Our face lights up and we are overjoyed when someone actually hands over a gift, especially when it is least expected. Gifts have become a fashion icon these days. Not only the gift that is given, but the one that's taken back. I'm a pediatrician, and it has been told that pediatrics is one of the toughest medical specialties, because it deals with young children who tough to understand and 'handle'.  This statement couldn't be any farther from the truth. Before I became a pediatrician, I too had been a believer of this view. I had had very little opportunity to interact with children, much less understand them, and they were truly an enigma for me.  My earliest personal experiences with a child was first, with my nephew, and later, my daughter.
