Today's women can be strong 'we-men'

The thought of independence drifted through, and the needle of the spin wheel stopped at the word 'woman' this time. Why do you think this thought has been doing its rounds on my mind since last evening? And how does it link to independence day?

Intrigued by the presence of a man in the word wo'man', I thought of a synonym. Probably the word was coined because women 'woo' men to take care of them and the entire family. The next best word that came to my mind was 'female'. This word also has a significant dominance, of the male. So I wanted to look up the etymology of the words 'woman' and 'female' just to make sure.

I read up more than I could actually digest, and my head became slightly heavy, indicating that I was drifting from the point I wanted to make. So what were my initial thoughts? Rearranging the random words and organising my thoughts take up a lot of my time and I look lost and forlorn until I accomplish something worthwhile. Then comes a time when I have to put the thoughts down on paper, or they will continue to eat my brain.

Putting aside all the information I had gathered over the past 24 hours, not continuously of course, I have finally taken the ultimate step of writing. But the thoughts keep moving like electrons that have suddenly gained immense energy. Before their momentum increases to the point of causing a nerve freeze, I definitely want to pen down my thoughts.

Speaking of women, I wish to link it to its pronunciation, which would describe the modern liberal woman very aptly. Why is the word pronounced as 'we-men'? Every woman in the we-men's force would agree with me if I say it highlights the actual spirit and dignity of womanhood. In my opinion, it means that we-men (women) are striving to be equal to men in all respects. Listed below are only a few:

We want to walk shoulder-to-shoulder with men.

We want to have the fundamental right to go out alone just like men.

We want to be equally independent as men.

We want to take family decisions like men.

We want our salary to be equal to that of men.

We want to stress our point and stand by our opinion in front of men.

We want to enjoy the same rights at the workplace as men.

We want to show our courage and dedication are equal to those of men.

We want to get equal respect for what we are, from men.

After 70 years of independence, today, I feel it is the right time to think back on whether women have been granted or denied their basic rights. You are wrong if you think I'm a feminist. I'm only humbly requesting every man out there to give the basic rights we-men deserve.

Let the we-men of today step into the shoes of men and see how different and beautiful the world becomes! Is any man willing to lend his shoes?

Gifts: Pricey vs. priceless

Why do we hesitate to say 'no' to a gift? Our face lights up and we are overjoyed when someone actually hands over a gift, especially when it is least expected. Gifts have become a fashion icon these days. Not only the gift that is given, but the one that's taken back. Even children, when they are the invitees of a birthday party, are eager to get something in "return" and that's how the modern concept of return gift was born. Children seem to be enchanted by return gifts even when they get a simple pencil box or a party cap. But how far this culture is taking us and the next generation, is a pertinent question. Today being Teachers' Day, my thoughts roll back to this insignificant but impacting gesture of children in a school I worked. The day started with hoots and cheerful din which I thought were rather unnecessary, at least not from school children who are barely 15. I can understand if those in the late teens had behaved so. The children who ...

All The World's A Playground

I'm a pediatrician, and it has been told that pediatrics is one of the toughest medical specialties, because it deals with young children who tough to understand and 'handle'.  This statement couldn't be any farther from the truth. Before I became a pediatrician, I too had been a believer of this view. I had had very little opportunity to interact with children, much less understand them, and they were truly an enigma for me.  My earliest personal experiences with a child was first, with my nephew, and later, my daughter. The moments I've passed with them have been no less than eye-opening and life-changing. Every day spent with them showed me my drab world in its raw beauty as seen through the unassuming, wonder-filled eyes of a child. In fact, all children are often better than grown-ups with many 'superior' traits. They live in a simple world with simple beliefs. All it takes is a keen eye and a loving mind to understand them. Children have ...

I'm no football

Sometimes, I feel I'm a football. Right from the word 'Go'. I can see the goal post and nothing else. Innumerable fans are cheering me and want me to achieve something, or at least score one goal. But this is not possible within a given time frame because this is no football match. And I'm a lone player. Ever since I started perceiving things around me, I've been hearing this word. In its many avatars . Is the word so addictive? The first one came up when I was in school. My life was full of life and threw so many surprises. A mountain of advice followed me like a shadow -- from parents, teachers, elders and family friends: "Have a goal in life. Otherwise you will be nowhere." "Goals inspire you to achieve." "Dare to dream but work towards a goal." Then came the late teens and I was into a bit of reading. Just plain inquisitive. But again, the word "goal" did not let me go. I read some of the quotable quotes f...
